Re: How would you equip a dinosaur poacher?
How about spooking them and have them run over a cliff? It's old, tried and true...

Sure most animals will run away from people *now*, but that's probably because humans already ate all the ones that didn't. A tiny little thing like a human might not trigger a threat response in a brachiopod, and not all threat responses are run away either.

You could force them to watch "Twilight".

Re: How would you equip a dinosaur poacher?
The thread title says "poacher", which assumes that they are hunting illegally. If this is the case, you not only have to kill the creature but somehow get its carcass out of the area quickly enough to not get caught by the authorities.

Re: How would you equip a dinosaur poacher?
'a heavy rifle' is the obvious answer, this is covered above.
Rapid-fire weapons would work but would be a messy alternative. Some sort of squad level machine gun would do the job. I think a rifle would be better for one-shot kills though. Another alternative would be RPGs. Would an RPG do enough damage to one-shot a large dinosaur? Not super accurate but cheap. Also, if the plan A is to neatly one-shot the beast, plan B could involve a couple of assistants standing by with RPGs in case the Great White Hunter fails to despatch a suddenly maddened dino. If you go heavier, an APC could carry a nice variety of cannon that would do the job. My guess for a quick fix in carcass butchery would be large chainsaws, block and tackle, lots of water-proof canvas and trucks. Googling the whaling industry would probably provide a number of useful ideas for dealing with multi-ton bodies. Longer term storage might require refridgerated transport, or at least a lot of ice. |

Re: How would you equip a dinosaur poacher?
Assuming it detonated, which is rather uncertain, sure. However, if you object to assault rifles because of mess, RPGs are also out.

I don't know a great deal about RPGs but I assumed a solid hit would detonate them. Tourists blow up cows in Cambodia with RPGs, right? Or that's what I heard, so a big dino should be solid enough. |

From what I know of Twilight, I think creatures with the some of the smallest brains in geological history (as a ratio of biomass) are pretty much exactly the target audience.
