Default Gnome Hireling and Big Item

I would like to know if I am interpreting the rules right. According to the Gnome Hireling card:

Quote:
+1 Bonus. It can carry and use any one Item that is legal for a Gnome to use. Its bonuses an abilities count for you. The Gnome Hireling also permits you to use one extra Big item.
From my understanding, the Gnome Hireling can carry two items, in practice:
1. One that is legal for a Gnome
2. An extra Big item

I assume my Munchkin doesn't need any free slots to carry any of those two items because the Hireling does it.

But what happens with those items if my Gnome Hireling is lost?

I assume that item 1 (the one legal for a Gnome) follows this rule:

Quote:
Other Hirelings can specifically carry and use an Item
themselves. In some cases, a Hireling can use an item you cannot
use for yourself. The items a Hireling carries count for you and
are affected by Traps, Curses, and Bad Stuff as though you were
carrying them yourself. If your Hireling has an item:
If your Hireling sacrifices himself to save you, any items he
was carrying are lost.
If your Hireling is killed, you loot the body yourself and keep
the items.
If your Hireling is taken away by a Trap/Curse, by Bad Stuff,
or by a change in loyalty, the items go with him!
And what about item 2 (the extra Big item)? I assume it follow this rule:

Quote:
Some Hirelings give you extra Hands, or let you carry an extra
Big or Complex item. In this case, the Hireling does not actually
have any items . . . he merely increases your own abilities. If
something happens to the Hireling, your items are not affected.
I am not sure about my items not being affected... If I cannot provide another way to carry the extra Big Item after losing the Gnome Hireling, I would have to give it to the lowest-level player (or discard it if giving is not possible), right?

If the Gnome Hireling were giving me an extra hand (like the Thief Hireling), I could keep the item carried with that hand turning it sideways if necessary, but that's not possible with the Gnome Hireling as we are talking about a Big Item. Could you confirm this?

Not quite. The Gnome Hireling lets you carry a second Big item; he doesn't carry it for you. It doesn't let you equip a second Big item unless you have the other slots for it (so if you have a second Big item that is Armor, you have to be able to wear Armor to use it).

I assume my Munchkin doesn't need any free slots to carry any of those two items because the Hireling does it.

Right. You can't keep a Big item you can't carry.
