Default Colors of Magic

Has anyone considered letting each hero choose one category of spells that they only pay double instead of triple cost for?

No, but I have thought of making classes of spells for a Wizard to choose which class he belongs to. Then those spells are cheaper to cast.

I rather not encourage magic with fighters. Instead I was looking for ways to make magic cheaper to cast. I never used it though.

Dark City Games divided up the spells in different schools, did they not? I kind of liked that idea.

Maybe do both. Everyone chooses a school/type of magic, or you have some sort of talent for each school that cost 1 for everyone.

Then you get spells from that school at a 1 point rebate. Either 2 spells for one if you are a wizard or only pay 2 if you are a hero. One could also change the costs of spells to be a little bit cheaper. Some spells rarely gets used because they are just prohibitively expensive unless you are a very mana invested wizard. But even then, there are some spells that really should be cheaper.

The good thing would also be that wizards had a theme. And we would see more odd spells, because the wizard got them as bonus spells from their different schools.

If the arch nemesis wizard was fire specialized then maybe Magic Rainstorm would be a good investment.

I always liked the idea of splitting magic up into categories.
  • Forcing wizards to choose, making them roll 4/DX for some categories and/or limiting their ability to learn such spells would be one way to weaken wizards.
  • Letting heroes learn a category would give them a limited ability to learn magic.
  • New classes could be created, e.g. druids might be allowed to learn some spells, but also get the nature-oriented and interpersonal talents.
  • The special wizard abilities like "can cast from books" could be one category in total.
The rule could be that each character got a certain number of categories, or that your earnt XP depended on how many categories you had. e.g. multiply the XP received by some constant minus the number of categories.

I would write this up, alone or in collaboration, if there were interest in the idea. But my impression is there isn't.
