if i have attack that affects insubstantial, that is follow up to attack that not affects insubstantial, can i use this attack on a spirit without doing any damage, to activate the follow-up attack?

Re: affects insubstantial follow-up
there is the flaming blade in dungeon fantasy 40 artifacts. its flame affects insubstantial creatures, even if the blade itself not. the question is how to do it mechanically.

Re: affects insubstantial follow-up
Just apply the follow-up damage. I don't think I understand the question/problem.

Re: affects insubstantial follow-up
"its flame affects insubstantial creatures, even if the blade itself not", which pretty explicitly says that the follow-up does but the blade doesn't.

Re: affects insubstantial follow-up
the flaming blade is example, that shows that this effect is possible. the question is, how to build it as innate attack.

Re: affects insubstantial follow-up
Add Affects Insubstantial to only the flame (since it affects ghosts), but not to the sword (since it doesn't).

So, for both parts of the attack to affect insubstantial, they would both need that modifier? I can see how it might be a little confusing. Follow-Up seems to imply that the carrier attack needs to hit to trigger the follow-up. Or is there a way to have a follow-up which does not require the carrier attack to hit? Using Link to combine an attack which does not affect insubstantial with an attack which does affect insubstantial would work. |

Re: affects insubstantial follow-up
Follow-Up only affects the target if the carrier attack "hits." But neither Insubstantial nor Affects Insubstantial say anything about hitting. A reasonable interpretation is that you can hit things that are insubstantial normally and if either the follow-up or the carrier has Affects Insubstantial, then that part has an effect.
