Default Question on Shock Shield spell

The spell states that it does 1d damage to "ANY OTHER" creature in the "SUBJECTS" hex......
When it speaks of the "SUBJECT" are they referring to one who cast the spell (myself) and/or if the spell is thrown onto a friend's hex who is engaged in HTH with one or more foes, do we assume my friend is the "SUBJECT" and they don't take any damage while all the others do?

Thanks for any input. It's been over 40 years since playing Melee and Wizard so I'm relearning. Also, I never played any preprogrammed games nor in the labyrinth so I'm looking forward to playing them.

The subject of a Thrown spell is almost always the target of the spell. There are rare exceptions like say Megahex Avert where a location is targeted and the figures at the moment of the spell casting around that location are subject to the spell wherever they go so long as the spell is maintained.

So a wizard can be hurt by the shock shield they cast on their buddy, but that buddy will be unharmed as they are the target and subject of the spell.

Just to be clear, the wizard would only get hurt if he then puts himself into the same hex as the target (subject) of his spell while still maintaining the spell (keeping it on).

I like Shock Shield spell but I have to admit it seldomly gets used. It has a couple nice advantages: ignores armor and hits every foe in your hex (your subject's hex). The downsides are: it is not often you lots of armored foes in someone's hex and that it does the damage at the end of the turn. For handling spiders/rats/wasps/bats a 1 hex fire is better in that the damage is immediate (2 damage for all friends and foes) clearing the hex of all such and if your friend has enough armor it won't hurt them for 1 turn.

Still Shock Shield is great for baiting Gargoyles into HTH onto your heavily armored friend. Just keep your wizard clear until the gargoyle is committed to HTH. Wizards just don't fair well in HTH.
