Perhaps having an NPC they respect be the voice of the rational conservatives on Barrayar and be disappointed with them for their lack of concern for his side of the issue?

At this point they seem to be avoiding any contact between the PCs and conservatives. I think I may need to hit them with a large political crisis where they can't afford to reject potential allies, and where the dividing lines aren't progressive/conservative.

I think on some of these issues characters that are nominally progressive would appear conservative, as you say even Miles would have considered that landlady's obligations.

There certainly are such issues in the setting.

My Ravenloft game has included themes of :
  • the glamour of evil
  • the persistence of the past
  • the enemy within
  • decay, both physical and spiritual
  • love and romance

I didn't initially plan to include a romance or enemy within aspect in the campaign, but those things emerged in play. I spend a lot more time thinking of characters and details of the setting than about 'big stuff' like theme.
