What is you favorite Fantasy Setting ?
Hi everyone,
out of curiosity, what are your favorite fantasy settings that you would like to see GURPS ressources on it ? It could be any fantasy setting, from a book, TV Show, movie, video game, you name it. Tell me what are your favorite settings and why ? Here are mine : Ultima I always liked the Ultima series. The fact that the main character is an ordinary man from our world becoming the savior of another. I like the trilogies : Age of Darkness, Age of Light and Age of the Guardian. I like the details of the virtue system. Maybe it's because it one of the first RPGs that I played at all. Shining Force It is by far the best RPG I've ever played on any system. I like the mix of medieval stuff with robots from an ancient lost civilization. The fact that Centaurs are the "default" knights in the world is very unique also. It's the best knight you could ever have :) , no spooked mounts, fast moving troops, no horse to feed, it's an army's dream. I like also the focus of the games on darkness vs light. Call me boring, but eh, I like that. Darkness vs Light gives plenty of opportunities for legendary heroic feats. |

I've stated this on other threads, but I'd like to see Runequest / Glorantha translated to GURPS.

Re: What is you favorite Fantasy Setting ?
I usually don't think the settings of my favorite books make for good gaming (frex, love LotR, but I never want to play in it), but I've always been fond of the Hyborian Age. Howard managed to stitch together a number of interesting bits of history in a way which makes it very easy to adventure through. Want something that looks like the Renaissance? Got that. Want some guys who look like Vikings? Got that. Ancient Egyptians? Check. Grand "Oriental" empires in the style of the Ottomans and earlier caliphates? Check. Knights in shining armor? Check. Darkest Africa? Check. Pirates of the Spanish Main? Oh, yes. GURPS Conan was an excellent book and I'm very happy to have a copy, but the license has moved on and I doubt there's any chance there'll be a 4e version.

League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, but that could be easily done with existing GURPS books.

Lots of them.
For the Urban Fantasy: Thieves' World The Sarantine Mosaic (Guy Gavriel Kay book) Current Fantasy settings for RPGS: Eberron, Ptolus. I *know* Forgotten Realms, since that's the setting that my computer server plays in. There are several Guy Gavriel Kay novels that have been inspirational Fantasy Settings. A Song For Arbonne stands out in my mind. -P. Mandrekar

Thieve's World because I love the gritty fantasy.
Black Company for the same reason as above. Ebberon is also a very gritty setting with a much higher amount of magic. To bad that its D&D. Game of Thrones would be a good one too. Spelljammer when I'm in the mood for over the top fantasy. Discworld for over the top funny fantasy.

Re: What is you favorite Fantasy Setting ?
Earthsea - oh god glorious books. I have a set locked away for my as-yet-unconceived future children to read.
The Dreamlands - Lovely work by Lovecraft, every level of fantasy is available. And the CoC refernce materials are splendid. Lord Darcy's Angevin Empire - Classic Pseudo-Victoriana world of magic and adventure. Narnia - I have not seen the movie, nor do I intend to. The wonderful books I read over 30 years ago are more than enough. Tolkien's Middle Earth - Beaten to death and chewed over, but every few years I revisit the original books (again the ones I read 30 years ago). GURPS Conan - I used it until it fell apart, got another copy, repeated. Gurps Yrth - This is not kissing up, because I've gamed through three versions of the Caithness Civil War in 3e. |
