Initially I took the ally path by player suggestion, and I thought of other ways to achieve the same result. I think ally is still a good way to do this since if that player dies, I can further use the spirit as an important NPC later, with split personality that spirit would be a second consciousness that would die along with him.
Also, with split personalities there would be no interactions and conflicts between the host and the spirit, I think it would be fun to create some occasional conflict, since he is very powerful in battle, an inconvenient conflict of interests with his ally during an important battle, possibly removing some abilities due to that if he upset his ally would be very interesting.
