Hey, I need to get some use out of my 4 years of High School Latin!

I agree with the blog comment that Greek is an excellent choice

Due to many years of watching anime I've used Japanese for stuff on occasion

I am really amazed! Either I failed at reading or you didn't include any Native American languages on the list

Actually that's a good point. I know a little Tsalagi (Cherokee) - and I mean a little, but it's current form is mostly a synthetic construction from the 1800s if memory serves. I know some of the older forms of Dine might be a good place to start...as might some of the Mesoamerican tongues. Hmmm. I'll dig into that when I've a clearer head about me.

Proto-Indo-European, the ancestor of Greek, Latin, Sanskrit, etc.

Proto-Celtic, because Celtic mysticism is always popular.

Klingon, because we all respect Sheldon Cooper.

Interesting options, though Celtic mysticism is a bit of a cliché IME and IMO.

I'm a little surprised that there was no mention of Hebrew, "the language that God spoke". Classic Maya Language would be nice for a campaign set in the New World. After all, they predicted the End of the World, didn't they? They didn't get it right, but at least they tried.

Hehe. Klingon. That'd be funny as hell for some sort of geek magic like Geekomancy

It's all cliche when you get down to it. The only reason I put up the post is that some campaigns/magic systems might be better served by a language other than Latin as its "mystical tongue" or whatever.

Hey, I'll add it to the post if you do a little blurb. I purposefully wrote the blog post to start a dialogue...this seems like a dialogue to me. :-D

There has been a group that did Klingon Wicca. Really. In San Francisco, naturally.

Welp. That's it. Shut 'er down everybody. We're not getting geekier than Beltane Birds of Prey.

Oh, definitely. A bit of an axe-grind on my part, I confess. I call it cliche because I've seen it used as a "drop-in replacement" for Latin, i.e., "lets use something other than Latin just to use something other than Latin."

I like what you are saying here: use something specific that fits the context rather than defaulting to "whatever is cool/popular" or "find something 'different'."

EXACTLY! As you may have guessed from my various ramblings: I'm a storyteller. It's so deep in me that when I was 14 years old I hopped a greyhound bus the day school let out and wandered up and down the East Coast looking for stories, working odd jobs, and sleeping under the stars. I did this for years and between that and the stories my grandfather used to tell me I learned that all stories are cliche because it's the cliche that speaks to us. It's just the dose (so to speak) of the cliche. It's kind of like making chili, too much spice and it overpowers the other ingredients, too little and it's bland. The stories that stick with us the most are those that get the "amount" of cliche right. :-)
