Randomly choosing a room
The mapmaker randomly chooses a room.
Does this mean that he/she randomly chooses a room tile but gets to choose the side? Or is the side random too? |

Re: Randomly choosing a room
The intent is for the mapmaker to pull out a tile and drop it on the table without looking at it until it hits the table.

Re: Randomly choosing a room
Thanks. That is how we played it but I was unable to get that clearly from either the rules or the forum.

Re: Randomly choosing a room
Sometimes when we play at work, we'll have one person who wants to participate, but not necessarily "play the game", at which point we let them essentially GM the game. Not only does he act as the banker (dealing with handing out treasures, DxMs drawing monsters, making sure everyone has the proper health tokens, etc), he also acts as the mapmaker. Our house rule is that in this scenario the mapmaker gets to actively choose which side gets placed. It's a great way to change it up, and usually results in games where we work together a tad more, since it's us vs. him.
Granted, I'm not about to explain to that guy that he's probably doing more work in all that than if he were just playing along... :D But back on track, Andrew is totally right. |

Re: Randomly choosing a room
While I am not going to contradict Andrew's ruling, what we have decided to do is that when you add a new room, you roll a d6. 1-3 you use whichever side whose title is closer to A and 4-6 you use whichever side is closer to Z.

Re: Randomly choosing a room
I put all of my room tiles in a large dice bag, and pull out a room without looking.
There are so many rooms that I actually have them in two dice bags. When a player explores a new room; I ask which bag they want it out of, and whether they want it rightside up or upside down.

Re: Randomly choosing a room
My fiance made me some cloth bags for both the rooms and the link tiles. You can see them here.
The bags have plenty of room for future expansions. They work really well. I just hand the player the bags and they draw a tile and place it on the table with out looking. I keep all four in a 'Looking for Trouble' box. |

Re: Randomly choosing a room
They would be easy to make and they do look good. I have a "cheaters" way of making bags with cloth and hot melt glue. If I make one I'll upload pictures.

Re: Randomly choosing a room
I don't like putting my Room Tiles in a bag. They could get damage in time. I shuffle them before the game, and their picked from the top of the pile (unseen) as is.
I also do Verble's idea of having a GM with my 8 year old son. This way he can learn the game as he watches us older boys play. Pat
