Another idea for invaders would be the Fair Folk from Exalted. The Fair Folk are capable of subsisting off of areas of magic (areas of very high mana would be the nearest equivalents in GURPS 4e) or they can consume sapient souls (in GURPS 4e terms, every level of permanent Will they consumed would sustain them for a month, but doing so is addictive). In essence, they would invade a world for their very high mana locations and for their tasty sapient souls.

Read Lovecraft's Dream Cycle it is a fantasy world being invaded by aliens.

One thing you could do is make a mighty continental empire that has fallen to the invaders. Normally, the empire exerts influence over the islands, but its recent conquest has reversed this. The invaders can't handle oceans as well as the islanders, which makes the islands safe.


You can have the main invasion happen nearby the islands, in which case they get used as a refuge for the continent, and be under threat of invasion, or you can have there be a big ocean between them.



Varying the climate between the islands and the continent could be fun.
