How many levels

We started playing Munchkin recently, and are loving it. I just went back to re-read the rules to make sure that we are doing everything correctly and our group started debating how many levels a player receives after winning a combat with multiple monsters. We have been awarding a level (or two) for defeating the original monster, but not for those that wandered into the fray.

After reading the rules again some of us began to think we have been shortchanging ourselves and should be awarding levels for each of the monsters involved in the combat. Which is correct?

Yes, you add up all the level rewards of all the monsters you kill at the end of the fight to determine the number of levels rewarded.
