Default Wandering monster vs regularly adding monsters

Hi all,

I am a relative newbie to the game and couldn't find the answer to my question after browsing through the existing threads. I believe I'm correct in thinking that the Wandering Monster card allows me to add a monster to the original monster in combat and then the player in combat would have to have more points than the combined strengths of both monsters. For ex, if a player has 10 points and is fighting an original Level 8 monster, then another player adds a Level 5 monster using a Wandering Monster card, then the player in combat now needs more than 15 points to defeat the combined 10+5 monster, right?

If that is the case, then how about in the case of adding monsters to the combat without the use of the wandering monster card. How does the math work? I understand best by examples so if you could give examples in you response, I would appreciate it greatly.

Thanks.
Daniel

You are correct about how the Wandering Monster card works.

Adding a monster by use of the special Undead rule or similar mechanics is exactly the same, from a combat perspective. Only the way the monster enters the fight is different.

I'm not sure what other methods of adding Monsters to the combat you might be considering (there are a few, but to my knowledge none of them act incredibly differently than by use of Wandering Monster), but in every single instance I know exists, I can say the following: Any time you are facing multiple Monsters, you add the combat strengths of all the Monsters and then the Munchkin side must beat that combined number. There is no complicated formula to figuring it all out, fortunately. Complicated formulas would probably drive lots of players away.
