Default Re: Changes in GURPS Basic Set: Campaigns between 5th and 7th printings

That PDF diff tool would be interesting to try on any other books which had later printings.

A good test might be the 1.0 / 1.2 versions of Technical Grappling like when Cole changed neck to part of head instead of head+torso.

I got confused reading how you could still spend CP on neck stuff until I remembered the adjacency rule so you could spend torso CP to affect head or limbs. Basically just clarifying that now head-as-hole (not just neck) is adjacent to torso I think.

Wouldn't 3/4/5/6 only be four?

Didn't even notice that, max glossary!

P. 566 Complete re-write of “Ludography”.

PP. 570-575 Corrections to the index.

PP. 343, 345, 350, 352, 358, 359, 364, 377, 379, 383, 394, 394, 400, 401, 402, 403, 405, 409, 420, 421, 423, 427, 428, 434, 435, 436, 437, 440, 442, 460, 461, 464, 467, 469, 480, 486, 493, 494, 495, 513, 515, 516, 527, 528, 531, 537, 538, 540, 545, 546, 552, 554, 561, 567 and 569: Adjustments to layout, no change in meaning.

P.576 Advertisement for e23 and Pyramid changed to one for How to be a GURPS GM.

A challenge to the pedantic: there is an utterly trivial new erratum in 7th printing, which I've carefully reproduced above. Can you find it?

Addendum: I'll do the same for Characters tomorrow.[/QUOTE]

5 "Reich" timelines spread over 4 quantums. There's no reason for them to only come 1 per quantum.

Go right ahead, if you have a Windows machine. That tool is free and quite easy to use.

They inherit Semi-Upright from chimpanzees, since it says:

Default How to tell what printing a PDF is from

There are two ways, which really ought to give the same answer, and do for the current and previous Basic Set PDFs.

First, find the back cover page, which says it explicitly, with a message just above the barcodes. The new Characters and Campaigns PDFs both say:

4TH EDITION , 7TH PRINTING
PUBLISHED JANUARY 2020

My previous Campaigns PDF has:

4TH EDITION , 5TH PRINTING
PUBLISHED APRILL 2011

And my previous Characters PDF has:

4TH EDITION , 3RD PRINTING
PUBLISHED FEBRUARY 2008

The other way is on the title page, where near the bottom right, you'll see a string of numbers, like:

"3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10", or "5 6 7 8 9 10", or "7 8 9 10".

The first number in that string is the printing number. This is a conventional publishing format, dating from a time where numbers could be clipped off a metallic printing plate with tinsnips to mark a new printing.

SJ Games don't produce a new PDF for Warehouse 23 each time they reprint a book. As Steven Marsh has said, the PDFs they sell there are not the same as the ones they send to printers, which are much larger. I deduce that they produce a new W23 PDF when there are meaningful changes to the text or layout, but I don't know for sure.

Default Changes in GURPS Basic Set: Characters between 3rd and 7th printings

These were found with the same PDF diff tool as I used for Campaigns. The previously available PDF of Characters was third printing, published in April 2008; the new one is seventh printing, published January 2020. Some of the changes are updates that seem to be intended to make the Basic Set fit better as part of the GURPS line, rather than being a near-standalone product.

Back cover: Change of printing, publication date and country of printing.

Title page: Change of printing.

All the following changes are in terms of Basic Set page numbers, which start at p. 1. Where I list adjacent pages individually, I mean that the changes are entirely on that page, and no text moves between pages.

P. 2: Changes in staff positions at SJ Games, change of copyright and printing information.

P.4: Two new boxes in the Skills chapter added to contents listing.

P. 5: GURPS has been in print for nearly 35 years.

P. 6: Re-write of much of “Notes on the Fourth Edition” and “About the Authors”.

P. 8: Changed URL for GURPS Lite.

P. 13: Changed URL for GURPS resources.

P. 25: Introduces a GM-determined limit on levels of Multimillionaire.

P. 27-28: Under “People Affected” and “Frequency of Recognition,” removes the (round down) notes on modifications to costs of reputations and inserts an instruction to drop all fractions at the end of the calculation.

P. 34: Inserts a reference to GURPS Powers at the start of the Advantage List.

P. 50: Corrects “you victim” to “your victim”.

P. 53-54: Last two lines of p. 53 moved to p. 54.

P. 54-55: Last two lines on p. 54 moved to p.55, last two lines of first column on p.55 moved to second column.

P. 58-59: Gunslinger has been rewritten and the layout changed to make room for it. Several lines of Hard to Kill have been displaced to p.59. Other changes to layout on p. 59, which don’t change the text.

P. 60-61: Layout changed, two lines at the end of p. 60 pulled back from p.61, consequent minor change in layout there.

P. 79: Very Rapid Healing corrected to recovering lost HP, rather than lost HT.

P. 80: Recovery: Removed spurious “by”.

P.89: Supernatural Durability: “below 0 HP you are at half Move and Dodge”.

P.89: Talent: Changed “This effectively raises your attribute scores for the purpose of those skills only;” to “This effectively raises your relative skill level with those skills only;”.

P. 102: Inserts a reference to GURPS Powers at the start of the Enhancements List.

P. 105: Surge modifier re-written for clarity.

P. 106: Malediction: Corrected “Most importantly…” to “Most important …”

P. 109: Side Effect resistance penalties changed to -1 per two points of injury, rather than of penetrating damage.

P. 115, bottom of second column, “Nuisance Effect” corrected to “Temporary Disadvantage”.

P. 122: Addiction: added a line to the effect that drugs with minimal or stimulating effect are worth 0 points.

P. 141: Kleptomania: Corrected “If fail” to “If you fail”.

P. 162-3: Last line on p. 162 moved to p. 163.

P. 185: Added box “Team Efforts” for making one roll for a team, based on “Got You Covered” from Action 1, p. 5. Pull quote dropped to make space and layout changed completely.

P. 195: First Aid skill description re-written to match up better with the injury and healing rules.

P. 197: Gambling cross-reference changed to Regular Contests, rather than back to itself.

P. 204: Leadership affects loyalty checks, not morale checks.

P. 206 Added box “Complementary Skills” with a significant extension to the previously-published rules, covering contested complementary skills. Layout changed to make space.

P. 228: Veterinary: Modifiers changed almost completely, “+5 if the animal knows and trusts you” has been removed.

P. 229: Inserted a reference to Martial Arts for more about Techniques.

P. 257: PK Abilities: Corrected cross-reference to Innate Attack.

P. 275: Box “Silver Weapons (TL1)” re-written to use cost factors, although without introducing the term.

P.287: Shields note 2: Spikes are available at TL1+.

P. 297: Absolute Direction is M/P.

P. 298: Ultrasonic Speech costs 0 or 10.

PP. 299-300: Column headers corrected to “Disadvantage”.

PP. 329-334: Index updated.

PP. 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10, 14, 15, 17, 20, 22, 24, 25, 26, 32, 33, 36, 43, 45, 46, 47, 48, 49, 51, 55, 63, 65, 66, 68, 71, 72, 73, 74, 76, 79, 80, 81, 84, 85, 86, 87, 89, 90, 91, 93, 94, 95, 96, 97, 99, 101, 102, 104, 105, 106, 107, 109, 110, 112, 114, 116, 117, 120, 121, 122, 123, 124, 125, 126, 127, 128, 129, 131, 133, 134, 135, 136, 137, 139, 140, 141, 142, 143, 144, 145, 147, 148, 149, 150, 151, 153, 155, 157, 158, 159, 161, 163, 164, 167, 168, 170, 172, 173, 174, 175, 176, 177, 179, 180, 182, 190, 191, 192, 193, 199, 201, 202, 203, 209, 210, 211, 213, 214, 216, 217, 219, 220, 221, 223, 224, 228, 229, 233, 237, 238, 243, 244-45, 247, 248, 251, 252-53, 255, 256, 257, 258, 259, 260, 262, 263, 264, 265, 270, 279,285, 289, 291, 293, 295, 296, 302, 304, 306, 308, 309, 311, 312, 313, 314, 315, 316, 317, 318, 319, 320, 321, 322, 323, 325, 327, 335 and 336: Minor changes in layout and/or typography, no effect on meaning.

Two pages added at the end advertising Warehouse 23 and the DFRPG.

Some of these seem like significant changes. Will they be posting the changes in the errata page for those of us who have hard copies of the books? I don't see anything yet.
