And sometimes Gnome and Kobold were alternate names for the same thing; mythology is like that. I saw one article claiming that kobolds were based on stories from further south about hairy child-sized mischevious forest people with tails (i.e. monkeys), and the stories mutated once they made it to an environment where there weren't any monkeys.

Personally I'd make them a diverse lot with some being scaly, some being hairy, some more animal, others more human. Inspired by the underfolk in The Silver Chair. Still, Rebel minis has a nice kickstarter for some old school horned-dog-lizard kobolds right now :D

If you look at the other species in GFantasy, kobolds are to goblins as stereotype australopithecines are to humans. And hobgoblins are the goblin equivalent of stereotype neanderthals.

I know this is a tangent, but what was offensive about GURPS Ghouls?

If you squinted at them funny they became analogs for medieval Jews hiding from the inquisition. Gully dwarves are all mentally handicapped and played for laughs. Kender are just annoying plain and simple. Personally the Kender are the worst of the lot.

"It's not my fault my character is being a jerkface! That's what Kenders do, I'm just roleplaying!" - everyone who ever played a Kender.

If you squint at any fantasy 'race' the right way they become an analog for something else.

Untrue allegations are untrue!

My Kender were never jerkfaces who stole from the party. They only pickpocketed everyone else... which was a problem all on it's own.

Full disclosure, I might be confusing my personal experiences with universal truisms.

That's okay. In my tabletop groups I'm the only person allowed to play both Kender and Malkavains.

So I do understand the universal hatred for Players of Kender and Fish-Malks.

In my case, never unless the GM arbitrarily said I had done so, and it was always done in a funny way, so nobody was irked.
