Question: Munchkin X-Men, Magneto's Helmet

If a player is carrying Magneto's Helmet Headgear ("Players may not steal cards from you"), but doesn't have it equipped, and he's not in combat, can somebody try to steal items from him?.

Based in the fact that players can change which items they have equipped at any time except during combat, if trying to steal an item, can the player equip and unequipped Magneto's Helmet just to avoid loosing the item?.

Not sure if clear enough, hope you get the idea. Thank you.

Once someone has started stealing your item, it is too late for you to equip the item that would prevent it.
