[3e] Armed Virginia Sloop
Armed Virginia Sloop (1768, TL5)
Privateers were privately owned vessels whose owners were commissioned by the government to engage in naval warfare. During the 18th century, many small single-masted ships were armed and used for privateering. These Chesapeake-built vessels were fast and easily maneuverable with graceful sheer and a low freeboard. Six cannon and eight swivel guns serve as armament. Subassemblies: Body +6 with Mediocre lines, one 84' Mast +2. Powertrain: 2,822 sf of Cloth Sails in a Fore-and-Aft Rig. Occupancy: 8-10 (1 helmsman, 2 riggers minimum; up to 16 gunners) Cargo: 88 tons. Armor: 3/5W overall Weaponry: 8 Swivel Guns (100 rounds each). 6 12-pdr Cannons (100 rounds each). Body: Navigation instruments, 8 hammocks, 1 cabin, galley, 140 man-days provisions. Statistics: Size: 117'x33'x88' Payload: 96 tons Lwt.: 141 tons Volume: 11,511 cf. Maint.: 63 hours Price: $99,487 HT: 8. HPs: 4589 Body, 182 Mast. wSpeed: 11 wAccel: 0.3 wDecel: 1 wMR: 0.05 wSR: 5 Draft: 4.8'. Flotation Rating: 299 tons. Design Notes: Structure is Medium, with Standard materials. Waterproofed. Armor is DR 5 Standard Wood. The volume of the armor is figured into the design, as per the rules on p. VEii5. Mast height was estimated from a scale model of the vessel. Volume was calculated using the Builder's Old Method based on an estimated length on deck of 75'. Empty weight is 90,204 lbs. BTW, my calculated performance values line up nicely with the vales for a large sloop in Swashbucklers. http://www.historicships.com/TALLSHI...p%20MS2160.htm
