Lost in Dreams (Jane Doe) - Page 28

A door appears on one of her surrounding screens, looking very much like that of an Italian restaurant. A very modern one, but... modern compared to what? She can't remember.

Yuria: "They're not that intimidating! but sure, we can start with the villa! You should try their... never mind. The Villa is very relaxing."

Yuria's avatar on the screen (a very life-like photorealistic one) walks through her door. (Olive will need to use commands to use the door to enter).

Yuria: "So What's your area of expertise?"

"I don't think I have one yet, but I'm trying to learn to read medical equipment so I can help with diagnosing whatever is causing the strange behaviors lately."

"SAU-Heera, enter door please"

"Oh, what capacity are you in on this ship then? "

"You mentioned strange behaviors. What strange behaviors?"

The screens surrounding Olive move her central point of view through the door into terrace filled with tables, plants, and trellises. Down the mountain was an immaculately kept landscape leading to a beach.

Olive's mind starts flooding her with facts. The vegetation indicates the site is in the western Mediterranean, as opposed to the east (and she somehow is disappointed its not further east). The building is not original 17th century architecture, but was based on it, built with artificially weathered elements.

Some people are dressed as locals, and some are dressed like they are on the spaceship. The tables are only sparsely populated, and only about half of the people are eating. Its kind of a restaurant, and kind of not. A thought goes through her mind that 2/3rds of the people she's seeing must be computer characters, not real.

"So I guess anything we eat here won't actually fill us up when we log out?"

A little voice in Olives' head makes a note of how "Modern" such an attitude is.

*seems miffed at the modern attitude* "I probably should be putting on weight, but I guess virtual food is less of a burden than actual food"
