As HeatDeath said though, a dagger through the head would certainly ruin your day in Real Life, so 11 points of damage seems pretty fair.



Plus, even with the doubling, the damage roll's full range would be 6-16, so the really surprising thing is that a successful dagger to the head might not be lethal.

If you want your 150-year-old Shaolin monk to laugh (or quietly chuckle) in the face of crossbow bolts and cold steel, the solution is simple: just make his robes out of the same stuff as Conan's loincloth.

[Yes, I am perfectly aware that in the original Howard novels Conan wore practical and historically appropriate armor.]

how do you stop fencers and martial artists from being slaughtered by ranged weapons?

if the honorable Dr. 'Indiana' Jones is any guide .. you dont :)

Yeah, if you want the pure martial artist archtype to work you're really gonna need a ring of reverse missiles and a ring of stone skin or the like.

Because all the unarmed combat skill in the world won't keep your guts from getting entirely too much fresh air when Mr. Broadsword comes to visit.

Unless your pure martial artist came from a Shaw Bros. movie, in which case he don't need no stinkin' ring to have skin as hard as iron, all he has to do is brace for it. And maybe grunt a little on impact.

Plus, he's so fast that no pathetic, cowardly missile weapon could ever hit him anyway.

Unless maybe it was thrown by a Boss Bad Guy, or at least a Lieutenant-level sub-boss. And it would have to be a thrown weapon, because bows are cowards' weapons, and only pathetic, low-level Extras are weak (or shameless) enough to use them.

Well… the other exception would be if your Shaw Bros. martial artist is in a party of others, and he has to play Sacrificial Rear Guard during a retreat. Then he loses his immunity to arrows — but each one only does a sixth of a point of damage, and for every half point he takes like that, he gets an auto-kill on 1d6 of the archers.

That sounds like an awesome game you're describing, but it sure ain't Melee/Wizard/ItL. :D

That sounds like an idea I had a couple of posts ago in this thread, but didn't bother writing up: building house rules for TFT based in the martial arts combat system in Kung Fu 2100. :p

I feel like you could go a long way to emulating all the crazy kung fu powers you could imagine by just pumping XP into having your heroes learn a couple of spells. Want to run through a hail of crossbow bolts and come out unscathed? Turn Missiles. Kill a giant with your 5-finger heart exploding punch? Hammertouch. It is hard to think of an effect you'd want your chambara fighter to do that couldn't be expressed using these rules.
