Default Drain Strength Transfer spell

Here is a

IQ = 14
Drain Strength Transfer (S):

Similar to Drain Strength spell (ITL p 24) , but lets wizard drain life force from others (humans or humanoids only) to
  • replace lost fatigue or exhaustion for himself or human (oid) friends
  • or other beings
  • or place the mana in things (like staffs or powerstones).

If the wizard critically fails his DX roll on this one, the wizard suffers TFT Magic Backlash (TFT Companion p 21).

It is the same as Drain Strength spell except for the words in red.

Wizard cannot use this spell to drain mana out of an object.

--------------------------------------
By the way, in Drain Strength spell, it says it is a Special Spell.

My interpretation of Special Spell (ITL p140) says treat range as Thrown spell with corresponding DX adjustments.

So you can do this remotely. Wizard Joe can drain Sam who is two hexes away(-2DX) . Wizard Joe could also drain Sam who is two hexes away (-2DX) and put it into Burt who is three hexes away.
So laying on of hands (0 hexes away and thus no DX penalty) is best.

The Drain Strength spell has its own special range rules so the Thrown Spell range adjustment does not apply as per ITL 140.

Yea, that's what I read before I wrote up the DST spell.

"If a special method of DX adjustment for the spell is described, use it. Otherwise, treat range as for Thrown Spells." (ITL 140)

It didn't say anything about DX adjustments (just if you blow your DX roll), so I concluded that you could Drain Strength remotely.

The original DS says that the victim must cooperate. So you can't drain them if they don't want you to. But I wonder how literal the word cooperate means? If you ask Joe Blow on the street "Hey, I'll bet you one glass of whiskey that I can make you tired without touching you" and he agrees, is that cooperation? He doesn't know what a Drain Strength spell is and you never mentioned it.

Ah, magical philosophy...

I'd say no: cooperation means he does something, not just doesn't interfere or gives permission. The wizard may have to explain what he needs done.

ITL 24: "The person being drained must cooperate or be subjugated (tied up, unconscious, etc.)"

I.e. any ability to wiggle out of the wizard's touch interrupts the spell.

Which is why you pin the victim then apply Drain Strength from a typical IQ 17 wizard who needs no ritual.
