Honestly, even Boat Wars is gimmicky. Other than the fact that they maneuver differently, you're basically still just playing Car Wars, only typically without any barriers to weapons fire, so it's actually worse.

Hovercraft actually do something different, so that's cool.

I don't know -- the places I've lived, river and air power were pretty darned important....

Just because something is important, it doesn't mean it has to be available to the players or a threat to them.

Too often we give players the keys to the kingdom and they just burn it to the ground ;)

I wonder what the DMs are for firing from a hippity hop. >:)

Doesn't matter -- what matters is the rule about how surface-running torpedoes can still hit Underbody armor; every boat event I ever was in, people just loaded up on Homing Torps and U armor.

the air rules are actually quite useful for setting building and roleplaying use.

The boat rules are most useful for Roleplay and Setting Building, rather than as a tactical game on their own...

I will say that Aeroduel is different enough to be quite amusing, and close enough to interoperate.

Proximity Fuses -- damage is lower, but "close" counts. :)

(Mixed emotions about _BW_ not accounting for "water-hammer effect"....)

Dang. I'm guessing that defeats the rubber ducky inner tube defense.
