If you're worried about bonuses being more than just technical and making sure they're somewhat thematic, that's a good rule to enforce.

For instance, your steel owl with blue diamond eyes should work fine, as long as you incorporate it into the casting -- say, by making a supplication to the effigy as part of the work.
