Default 10,000 character limit in posts vs quote tags

Is there any way to exclude characters within quote or other formatting tags from contributing to the count? I just noticed that one trick I could do if slightly over the limit, when quoting someone, is to remove the ";12345" type code following the "quote=" which causes a link to the earlier post, and this lessens the count.

If you're immediately replying to a post directly before you, you basically don't need that link, so that's one way. Shortening (or omitting) the name after equals (just using |=quote=| without a name) is another way.

Having a char limit which counts text inside brackets (this even includes bold or italic or color coding) seems to discourage formatting like that, even though such formatting doesn't actually make the post longer. It would be neat if it was possible to non-count those characters, but I don't know if that is something feasible for the BBcode software.

Have you considered trimming the length of text you are quoting? Couldn't you just summarize the other person's point to which you are replying? (Thereby giving you more text for your own comment.)

Hope this helps.

Nope. Sorry.

Summarizing the other person's comments can lead to confusion and unhappiness if the summary is inaccurate.

Best to just trim the unnecessary bits.

As far as the back end engine is concerned, yes it does. It might not affect the screen real estate taken up by the post (though size tags do), but it certainly affects the number of bytes.

This seems like a good policy. It encourages brevity. Lots of people need to learn to trim their words. After a certain point it becomes TLDR anyway.

Being curious I checked some of my essays from school and it seems that 10k characters is about 2000 words, and the way I write essays I fit 350-500 words per page. So this is at least 4 A4 pages of solid text.

Custom tagging modifications, aside from saving on character count, would also allow manual typing of tags with less effort.

Bold/Italic/Underline is opened/closed with (B)(/B) (I)(/I) (U)(/U) with square brackets, for example, I wonder if it's feasible to allow [Q][/Q] as a substitute?
