how about letting him play a sunni moslem character somewere far away from his homeland ? A traveling explorer, scientist or mercenary, for example. This would let him be the sole interpreter of his own social/religious values, and leave you off the hook of presenting moslem culture until you feel safe to bring the storyline into those areas of Yrth ? |

This sounds like a very good proposal.

Another thing could be to LET him play a muslim. Some nearly modern person type transferred to yrth. Could be a campaign, turning into some magicitan trying to create a second banestorm :-)

Jurgen, forgive my ignorance, but is "The 13th Warrior" available in Europe? Based on a Michael Crighton novel about the historical figure ibn Fadlan of Baghad who visits Russia during the 10th C. The movie and novel are fictionious past the initial trip to Russia. But it desribes this sort of idea...a Muslim in heathen lands. Some consider it the best fantasy Roleplaying movie. (I don't, but it's good.) Tony

It's also facinating for an Norwegian to hear the people who are supposed to come from the same place varying in accent from proper norwegian to heavily american accented norwegian and such. :p But anyway, a cool movie.

If your campaign is going to have what amounts to a medieval Muslim in foreign lands facing unknown forces, this movie should prove useful for inspiration. If you're not, the movie should still prove to be somewhat entertaining, so long as you can suspend your disbelief for the language learning scene early in the film. ;-) |
