I realise that I'd forgotten the Le Guin elements of Raygun-7. Basically, the colonial world is smouldering from the rage of the colonised. From the Canal Priests of Mars to the intellectual communities of Cairo and Beirut to the dock workers of Legoes to the bearers of the Venusian jungles, the colonised are becoming politicized. Empires are getting ready to fall.

What killed empires in OTL was the physical and financial devastation of the colonial powers by two horrific wars in two generations, and the replacement of those powers by only two nations, neither of which had much interest in colonial empires of their own.

In this setting, the colonial empires have the wealth of three planets available, and unassailable command of the high ground.

Do you think any colonial overlord in the early years of the 20th Century would have hesitated to deploy "Rods from God," if they'd had the technology? Or even blinked before using them against the fuzzy-wuzzies\wogs\Paddies or whomever challenged the status quo?

What event, or sequence of events, is enough to economically devastate a colonial power with access to the resources and strategic advantages of space ?

The ever popular disease out break.

A major natural disaster on the home country, remember Colonial Empires tend to keep their manufacturing centers at home, to better control their empires. Perhaps a super volcano, or large asteroid.

Another Colonial power dropping rocks on them.

This high inertia reality is sliding toward WWII and has already slammed into WWI and the depression. The colonial Empires are powerful and bitter but they are facing WWII and likely greater devastation than in Homeline. With FDR and Stalin still leading the USA and the USSR respectably. Note: Russia lost its extraplanetary colonies after the Revolution with Britain and France taking the Lion's share.

Always! And a Raygun Gothic WWII with sinister fay in the shadows is naturally a highly seasoned dish.

Last night (2/2/2019) I watched The Giant Claw a not bad giant monster film with one of the gooniest looking giant monsters in films. Still, the problem is interesting.

On Rukh there is a infestation of giant predatory birds. Now, given the local year is 1960 and the tech level is seven if these were just gigantic predators then the problem would be keeping the birds from going extinct. However, these birds seem to be able to phase out of line with physical attacks.

The birds, while gigantic, aren't as large as the bird in the film. They're about five times larger than Pelagornis and superficially similar in appearance. Or what scientists think pelagornis looked like.

The birds seem to eat humans exclusively. They attack humans living at high altitudes, those living in mountains, those riding in planes, etc... How the birds get enough calories to live is a mystery. How such large birds fly is a mystery. How the birds phase out is a mystery.

In the three years, the birds have been around, society has changed massively. Mountainous regions have been abandoned if possible. Land transport mainly by armoured trains. The upper levels of skyscrapers are abandoned and often taken down. Suburbs are being replaced with apartment complexes (the birds don't like attacking sea level houses, but they get hungry). Trade is down, but armoured convoys still maintain sea trade.

This is a Q6 low mana world, or it was. Now that the birds are here the mana level seems to fluctuate from low to high with no discernable pattern either of duration or sequence. Both Homeline and the Cabal assume the birds are supernatural living beings, like dragons or unicorns. Centrum isn't interested in this world.

Note: The birds can fly as fast as Mach 1.5. Again, where that get the energy is a mystery.

Speculation: They aren't just feeding on human bodies, their feeding on human magical potential, or something like that, much like the way human sacrifice works in some settings.

That would be the way the Cabal sees it.

Building a Homeline/Cabal alliance to study and eliminate or drive off the birds would be the goal of this setting.
