They weren't unusual in Australian culture of the time. Having a mate to work with is what kept rural workers in Australia alive before automobiles, radios, and the Flying Doctor.

As far as 'emo' goes, you are cheating yourself by not reading the book.

Waaaay better than the film.
Then they weren't friends. I meant emo from Frodo's actions not the doe eyes the actor spewed at the camera.

Neither Frodo nor Sam are farmers. Frodo is a rich bachelor whose wealth precludes any need for labor. We don't know if the Bagginses own any farms, but it seems clear enough that Frodo isn't taking an active interest in such business. Sam is a garderner, a servant.

Not at all! In any sort of isolation and adversity, two can very, very often survive where one alone would die. The simplest things can kill you when you're all alone, which with the least helping hand are mere annoyances.

Why would you think that they were not friends? Does not compute.

I see. I'm glad they kept that classism out of the movies. I wouldn't have appreciated that or been able to sympathize with Frodo as much.
It makes Sam seem like a broken man with slave mentality. Not pleasant for a heroic movie, in my opinion.

You can't be friends with your master. Either he was a servant or his friend.
I guess it's just my ideas of innate human rights getting in the way of sympathizing with them.

Well, maybe. When I was in hospital last week the consultant in charge of the unit introduced himself as "Dr. Washington", but the registrars and residents were "Andrew", "Herman", "Melinda", "David" etc. I found it rather disconcerting.

I think you are mistaken about that.

They weren't just two people. They were two tiny men with absolutely no useful experience, military or basic traveling. Realistically, helpful novices cause more trouble than they are worth.
