[Mass Combat] At what distance do I roll The Reconnaisance Contest?

Greetings, all!

MC says to roll the Recon Contest when forces are in the general vicinity of each other, but isn't clear. So at what distance is the contest initiated? Can the distance be derived from the Terrain Ratings?

It also seems that one can attack immediately after the Contest. Is that always so?

I don't know if there is a 'rules-based' answer, but it seems to me that logically the range depends on the nature of the forces. Satellite recon and light infantry recon seem to imply/require quite a variation in distance. Perhaps TL could serve as some kind of proxy for this calculation.

I guess it depends on the terrain, the size of the armies, and the reconaissance resources available. For example, the relevant range for two small infantry forces moving through Woodlands could be as low as a few hundred meters! But in Rural terrain, it would probably be a few miles. I think the main effect of TL would be to allow some forces to contain units which increase range if their side wins.

I agree with Polydamas. I don't have Mass Combat, but I suspect a relevant -Tech book is needed to make official rulings. Surprising that there isn't a single table in Mass Combat.
