Re: Building better Supers templates
I'd probably use a different set of roles. In the whateley universe, heroes can be sorted into the following categories:
Brick - Strong and Tough Mover - Fast and Mobile. Super Speed, Fast Flight, or Teleportation. Blaster - Powerful ranged attacks. Brain - Complicated and flexible powers, usually with really high IQ. Magic, Psi, Gadgeteering or Devising, Flexible Shifters, etc. Wildcard - Two or more of the above. |

So for example: Blaster Function: Ranged Combat. At high levels can cover all of precision, power and area of effect. Can be either innate powers or skill with ranged weapons. Examples: Hawkeye, Cyclops, Storm, the Human Torch Abilities: High DX and ranged combat skills, high defenses, Gunslinger for shooters, Weapon Master and Heroic Archer for archers, Innate Attacks for those with powers. GURPS Models: The Shooter and Assassin from GURPS Action, the Blaster from Supers. Combat Artist Function: Close Combat, particularly against multiple low powered foes. Abilities can be based on training or powers, emphasizing agility and avoiding attacks over toughness. At the high power end this can include speedsters. Examples: Captain America, Daredevil, Iron Fist, Spider-man, Quicksilver, Mockingbird, etc. Abilities: High DX and combat skills, high defenses. GURPS Models: The Acrobat, Man Plus and Sifu from Supers, the Fast Guy, Traceur and Weapon Master from GURPS Action 3. Gadgeteer Function: Solve scientific & mechanical problems plus whatever his gadgets let him do. Examples: Iron Man, Ant Man, Steel, Mr. Fantastic Abilities: High IQ plus Gadgeteer, Science and Engineering skills. Also, gadgets that let him fill some other function (Blaster & Powerhouse are popular.) GURPS Models: The Dreadnought & Techno from Supers Morph Function: Multiple - change form to deal with problems. Usually good at both sneaking and close combat. Examples: Beast Boy, Mr. Fantastic, Plastic Man, Ms. Marvel Abilities: Morph, Stretching, possibly Shrinking and Growth GURPS Models: Metamorph and Rubberman from Supers Powerhouse Function: Strength and high powered close combat ability. Examples: Power Man, the Hulk, the Thing, etc. Abilities: High ST of course, IT: Damage Reduction, Damage Resistance, etc. This is a little tricky to scale - after a point it becomes much more cost effective to use the Super ST enhancement and IT:DR over regular ST and HP but the transition isn't clean. GURPS Models: The Big Guy from Action 3, the Brick and Archetype from Supers. Sneak Function: Stealth and scouting Examples: Black Cat, Wasp, early Invisible Girl, Shadowcat Abilities: High DX and mobility/thief skills. Either Trained by a Master and appropriate cinematic skills and techniques (for the ninjas and cat burglars) or Powers such as Shrinking, Invisibility or Insubstantiality that allow you to sneak around. GURPS Models: The Phantom from Supers, the Infiltrator from Action, the Ninja from Action 3. Troubleshooter Function: Problem solver - you're good ant finding things out, solving puzzles and providing any skills needed, The High DX lets you act as a Combat Artist of sorts. Examples: Batman, Black Widow in the MCU Abilities: High DX and IQ for skills, Intuition, High Perception, Jack of All Trades GURPS Models: The super agent Action template from Pyramid 3/53, the Renaissance Man from Supers, the Investigator from Action Wizard Function: The power version of the Troubleshooter - you can do a wide variety of things. Examples: Dr Strange, Zantanna, Green Lantern Abilities: Magery or Modular Abilities, other advantages/skills to support them. GURPS Models: Improviser, Supermage I'd probably toss in Action style lenses as well. Maybe make them 25 points instead of 20 so Wildcard skills can be fitted more easily. |
