Stoned Golem & other monster vs. Halfling & non-Halfling

We ran into a situation yesterday that I wasn't able to resolve by reading the FAQ or searching the forums.

A Halfling player was facing a monster, and then had a Stoned Golem wandered in on him. He then asked a non-Halfling player for help, and she agreed.

Can the players ignore the Stoned Golem (and only fight the other monster) because one of the players isn't a Halfling, or do they both have to fight both monsters (because one of the players is a Halfling)? (This assumes the Halfling player refuses to discard his race.)

They have to fight.
