I'd be inclined to keep something like Thaumatology (possibly with a required specialization) as the core skill, but to replace Symbol Drawing with Artist. The reasoning is that the core skill reflects your understanding of the magic, while the symbols normally associated with Path/Book Magic get replaced by works of art.

Another approach would be to use Symbol Magic as your baseline — but again, replace Symbol Drawing with Artist.

As Symbol Drawing and Artist are both IQ/Hard skills, both of these actually work pretty well.
