How to model a TL3 Metal Quarterstaff
I have a Mage character that I want to have a metal staff - one that's able to stand up in combat against swords more often.
I don't think it's possible to enchant a wooden staff with anything besides transforming it into Essential Wood to strengthen it. If I wanted a staff made out of a TL3 metal, that has been enchanted somehow to not be much heavier than a wooden staff... how would you do that? Alternately, if it was not metal, is there a way to make a wood staff stronger besides Essential Wood? Thanks :)

Re: How to model a TL3 Metal Quarterstaff
The Shatterproof enchantment (DF1 p30; probably in Magic or something as well) makes a weapon unbreakable. It costs $8,000, however. A cheaper option is Fortify (increases DR). Do note, however, that at 4 lb you don't have to worry about it breaking against anything less than 12 lb (unless you're using a houserule to allow weapons to damage it on a Parry, or enemies tend to actually target it).

Re: How to model a TL3 Metal Quarterstaff
You could possibly do a metal-plated quarterstaff.
This would be a quarterstaff that has been wrapped in bands of thin strips of metal, most likely steel, and probably riveted directly to the wood at the top, bottom, and various points along the middle. Weight-wise, you'd add maybe a pound or two, and add DR 3 or thereabouts to the weapon itself. The cost would probably be about a CF +1 or +2, or twice to thrice the original cost. (As Quarterstaffs are cheap, this wouldn't be too hard on the PC's budget.)

Quote:
Shatterproof doubles DR and HP of Staff(to metal weapons,as sword it adds one level of Fine...Regular wpn to fine...fine to very fine for breakage purposes). Essential Wood triples DR and HP of wooden object... So Staff enchanted with both would be: A)1 inch thick Staff = DR 1 ,HP 14 B)2 inch thick Staff = DR 2 HP 18 So enchanted with both Essential wood and Shatterproof = A) 1 inch :::> 1*3*2= DR 6 14*3*2 = HP 84 B) 2 inch ::::>2*3*2= DR 12 18*3*2 = HP 108 You could than cast Toughen spell on it to add upto +8 DR to it. And if it still gets damaged you could cast Repair on it to fix it . |

Re: How to model a TL3 Metal Quarterstaff
The problem with a metal staff is that since it is not a living material, it can't be enchanted with the the Staff spell...but which would make it a lot less useful for a magic user.

My impression was that shatterproof and fortify were only for Armor.... can they be used on weapons?

Shatterproof but not Fortify. Fortify is an armor enchantment, Shatterproof can be used on any item(M 118).
Anyway, I'd do an iron staff like this: Sw+3 cr, 8 lbs, $50, ST 10, other stats same as Quarterstaff. Used with 2-Handed Sword skill, its ST is 13.
