Question 21 [MC][Name 5] - Implants
What 5 pieces of implanted technology has TIO brought to the market in their last product release? Are they "Highlighted" in any particular way?
Answer 21 [MC][1/5] Implant- LinguaVox D-Series

From What's Ware Today? - The Cybertech Reviews Channel

Following the success of their AngelVox voizer arrays, TIO is capitalising on their reputation in the speech-tech world with a new concept - natural language emulation! By plugging into the speech centres of the brain, the LinguaVox D-Series picks up a speech act you've formulated in your own language, translates it to your selected output language, then its articulator module takes control of your vocal tract to let your thoughts come out in that language. It literally puts the words in your mouth!

The seven-node articulator connects to your diaphragm, pharynx and glottis - controlling the basic AngelVox inserts - as well as the tongue, jaw and upper and lower lips.

Naturally, you'll want to understand what the other person says back to you, so the LinguaVox includes an auditory nerve inducer to relay the translated conversation.

As is the new TIO design principle, the main controller is externally mounted below the mandibular joint, with stylish fibre conduits running along the jaw to the lips, all available in subtle lavender, pearl, shell pink or maroon stylings on a faux-bakelite texture.

But enough of the commercial copy - what do the users think? Among all the nine-star ratings, a few grumbles show that the LinguaVox has some teething problems. Many say that the high latency in producing speech means it's still a way off from making you sound like a native speaker. Another issue is that the audio loop sometimes picks up your own speech and translates it back to you, creating very confusing feedback. Others find the implant's motor control "marionette-effect" to be quite disturbing.

But the biggest bug is this - think about how the implant picks up your sub-spoken thoughts and emits them for you… But what if that thought was not for public consumption? Users are sharing their "Did I just say that out loud?" moments on day-recorder channels. The one where a poor guy is introduced to his girlfriend's father for the first time descends into the old ultra-violence quite rapidly.

Our What to Ware Ranking = 7/9

Question 36 [STG] - Cyberware and Cyborgs
What's the state of cybertech in 2099?
How common is cyberware in general? What about for casual or professional use? For fashion? And how common is combat cyberware on the street?
How common are full cyborgs?

Question 37 [STG] - Androids and Bioroids
Do we commonly have androids or bioroids/replicants getting around?

Answer 23 [MC]- TIO External Security Division: SegParapet

23c) The Stack
For eliminating particular nuisances that don't require her personal oversight and that can basically be arranged by handing over a large sum of cash, Colonel Vieira uses The Stack. She has, in the secure vault next to The Cooler Box, an unlicensed bashcoin charge card encoder. Illegal, but not uncommon. She accesses the accounts of various shell companies, paper companies, non-existent citizens and such from a dozen countries, and siphons off a few million bashcoin, making a stack of encoded disposable cash transfer cards charged to their 100K limit, bundled and shrink-wrapped in lots of 10.

She takes this stack down to T-town where she passes it to someone like The Elf, a facilitator, who she'll describe the target to in the back of a sound-proofed 6-seat pedicab as it tours the horticultural allotments, among the grow lights, beneath the buzz of the drone traffic passing overhead.

Has urbanization continued, or do suburbs compete with farmland? Are people building new cities, swelling up old ones, or spreading out
The population of the world is floating around twelve billion about five hundred million down from it's peak. As a result of global warming, biofuel/biomaterial competition and pollution traditional food production can't easily feed this number of people and as a result vertical farms are a common feature in population dense areas.

The poorest segment of the population eats a largely algae based diet. While the next financial strata of society can eat a wider range of food it is generally prepackaged and made from GM crops developed for indoor factory farms or industrial outdoor mega-farms. Their diet also features vat grown meat and farmed fish. The 0.01% however can enjoy a range of organic and exotic foods that are only limited by their personal tastes.

The combination of vat food and microfacs has led to "Mankind has reached the ability to be post scarcity, it's only those in power holding us back" being a common theme in conspiracy theories and political movements.

The urban spread that had stalled during the middle of the century started up again in the 2080's. Gated communities with their own private or contracted security are common in and around population centers.

Many areas have also seen an influx of climate refugees. Regular "century" storms, rising sea levels and other environmental imbalances have driven many from their homes. These people generally fill the societal niche of poor immigrants but there are places where literal refugee camps exist. It goes without saying that these places produce many angry people.

The changing environment has seen some cities and suburbs virtually abandoned due to plummeting local populations and the debts relating to environmental rehabilitation. Many non-coastal or otherwise unaffected cities experienced surges of urban renewal and energy efficent arcology like buildings. Various governments have encouraged new city developments in areas that they considered safe enough from climate change, these have had mixed results.

Question 24 [STG][Name 10] - Main Languages
What are the top ten languages?
- (1/10) Sulawesi Gibboneze
- (2/10) English
Answer 24c) Japanese
The pool of native Japanese speakers hasn't increased significantly in the past 50 years, but there's a large cohort of second language speakers who have studied the language to gain advantage in business dealings with or employment in the dominant Japanese corporate hegemony. Tools and implants like TIO's LinguaVox or its competitors are also very popular with ambitious suits, and they are an important market segment for such product lines. The LinguaVox Executive E-Series has more subdued styling and includes a cultural assistant that whispers context-based hints to the user, such as "present your business card now with two hands".

Languages
Answer 24-d
C-kwentia

This is a simple language that evolved in conjunction with voice recognition technology. It uses a stilted cadence and short distinct words that are well suited to providing clear instruction to computers. The tones and sounds used carry well over background noise. Words have been taken from many of the worlds languages and some simple words match up to quite complex macro type commands. It is considered insulting to use this micro-language to talk to a person.

Answer 38A [STG]: Guns for Civilians
Gun law hasn't changed much on paper. Countries that were harsh on guns in the early 21st century remain harsh on guns (i.e. Japan, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam, China), and there are few if any ways around it. May issue countries still refuse to issue permits sometimes, though what they are willing to license has become slightly more permissive. Shall issue countries remain easy to acquire guns. Less officially, things are slightly looser.

Street level punks are going to have trouble getting guns in may issue countries. Interconnected systems and automatic checks make it difficult for guns to be acquired under the table, and most have some kind of criminal record or stigma that is used to deny weapons. The few that do have guns tend towards antique 20th or early 21st century weapons, that lack easy checks on newer weapons. Sometimes more recent weapons may be found.

Corporate security almost always goes through legal channels. Even in very restrictive regions, they are able to acquire guns comparable to police forces, by deputizing their security forces to the police, though they may have to go through more extensive searches for security personnel. For corporate paramilitaries, they usually act more like organized crime, producing weapons themselves by microfac, without regard for laws.

Organized crime tend to have connections or their own supply of weapons. In general, they are producing there own weapons locally with microfacs, instead of trafficking them, and they are not selling them. This generally ignores any arms control requirements in the regions where they are based. In more permissive regions, they may acquire weapons "legally", using corrupt officials to ensure they are licensed a permit. Sometimes they even get the same kind of deputization as corporate security.

Freelance agents tend to either have to acquire weapons from their client, or make do with what is allowed under the law. Most can't afford to maintain expensive manufacturing capabilities wherever they go, but on the other hand, they are without any stigmas that are used to bar weapon ownership in their locale.

Revolvers and other old fashioned weapons tend to remain available without security checks. They generally lack the sophisticated electronics that are used to keep track of modern guns.

Modern civilian weapons are mostly semi-automatic and regulated through electronic trackers. While it is impossible to stop the gun from being able to be fired, they all can be tracked remotely by GPS. This also stifles their ability to be used in insurgencies, where remaining hidden is critical. Only larger sizes are normally available.

Microfac weaponry is easily available on the web. Thus, the primary method of stopping this method of circumvention is by ensure microfacs can only print properly registered designs. This has led an odd association between IP piracy and illegal arms manufacturing. Arms from as holdout needlers to automatic rifles can be made, though costs can be prohibitive.

What groups are opposed to TIO's Andean Corridor project?
Answer 34a) Imperador Integrated's InterHub do Cabo-Istmo
The main rival to TIO's Andean Corridor is Imperador Integrated's road transport megaproject. It has similar aims but a more ambitious scope - a continent-spanning network of superhighways, extending "from the Cape to the Isthmus." In contrast to the Andean Corridor, InterHub highways also extend along the east coast, and in fact the Mercosur-Chile Hub is already largely complete and operational in many sections.

The InterHub roads are based on smartroad technology, where peletons of self-driving trucks, buses and cars speed along in groups of up to 25 vehicles at speeds of 300kph. The highway roofs made of carbon nanotube, high efficiency solar panels and the piezoelectric road surface in braking zones before off-ramps generate electric energy to be supplied to vehicular charging stations and local neighbourhoods.

Most of the superhighways are built (or are planned to be) elevated 50-100m above the surrounding countryside, to supposedly lessen environmental impact and to even out elevation changes for the vehicles they service. The Andes-crossing sections, however, will necessarily rely more on extensive tunneling. Acquiring the required land for new tunnels, or preferably buying existing construction to upgrade, has brought them into direct competition with TIO, who have more friends in governments along the Pacific coast.

Cost is also becoming an issue. Being roads and not rail or maglev should mean InterHub has a lower per-mile cost, and focusing on transport first instead of other infrastructure should make it overall easier and cheaper to complete. However, continual sabotage of remote construction sites by eco-terrorists, as well as a slew of regional court battles and competition with TIO for real estate, have seriously blown out their cost projections. Any number of mid-level managers may consider more desperate measures to complete that extra mile of road and impress their superiors.

Are there flying cars?

Question 40 [MC] - Resorts
What's a favoured (TIO-subsidiary) holiday destination for TIO executives?

Question 41 [MC][Name 5] - Off-Book Projects
What are 5 research projects, industrial activities or illicit connections that particular TIO departments are involved in that would cause severe damage or embarrassment if they were revealed to the public or the authorities?

Answer 28 [MC]- Gargoyle Project
What kind of training, bio- and/or cyber enhancement do elite soldiers put through (or created by) TIO's Gargoyle Project receive? What does a Gargoyle look like and what can they do? Does the project have any.... issues?

The gargoyle project has two aims primarily to enhance and maintain elite operatives for TIO. The second aim is to investigate the practical problems and issues faced by enhanced individuals so that future TIO enhancement products can be better suited to lucrative contracts.

In general gargoyle operatives are selected from those with impoverished backgrounds and they receive a high quality lifestyle and a wide range of unobtrusive enhancements. Implanted cyberware is either high end versions of common civilian devices or is disguised as such. Bionanic enhancements to improve sensory abilities are universal provided due to their largely undetectable nature. Organowoven replacement parts are used upgrade endurance and improve mobility especially climbing. Neurochemical synthesizers provide canine like loyalty, highly enhanced reflexes and what are deemed as the "positive" traits exhibited by combat junkies.

Internal improvements decrease the damage effects on gargoyle operatives. All these improvements and enhancements are individually not uncommon among security operatives. What sets the gargoyle operatives apart is two things. One, they have highly trained staff managing the integration of all the individual components and two, the armour that led to the project's name.

Gargoyle armour
Implanted armour is an not a new product, armour that is produced from internal reservoirs is. Given thirty seconds a gargoyle operative can generate a layer of protective material comparable in dimensions to a wetsuit (provided they have the latest model). Roughly equivalent to a personal suit of obvious light armour, quick adhesion points allow the addition of ballistic plates and a facemask of available. The camouflage system is rudimentary by 2099 standards it can produce only dull stone like textures, IR concealment is better but far from perfect. This armour combines the benefits of worn and implanted armour, the only issue is the current cost.

While gargoyle operative suffer less burnout than many of their contemporaries due to their unique blend of neurological chemicals they are however prone to try and "stay in the game" after retirement. Unfortunately for these retirees their very high performance implants require a considerable amount of upkeep.

Question 42 [CTY]
What city or location in this setting deserves a bit more focus? Mentioned so far are Copacobana, Mu-sigma and the New Caribbean Archipelago, there is no need to be limited to these however.

Yes.

I suppose I'll have to expand on that.
Quik cabs quad service is a quadrotor taxi service available in most cities. It is only popular in cities built or rebuilt after about 2050. Buildings in older cities just don't have the landing areas.
Quads are the cheap(er) option, the wealthy use dual's which are dual propulsion craft, ion and rotor systems working in tandem. The improved lifting capability allows for a more solid "feeling" while flying. Duals also see use by police and law enforcement.

Question 43 [STG]
How hard is it to thwart "big brother"?
