The stage version, too; it's one of my favorite bits. By the time the story is done, you've also seen the doors to the doctor's office open and close by themselves. As the story goes along, the weird events keep getting weirder ... essentially, the audience gets drawn into Elwood's world.

Our director underlined that by having Elwood be the one colorfully dressed character on a black-and-white set, surrounded by a cast in subdued shades. As the story evolved, splashes of color began appearing on the set and in the costumes. By the final curtain, the set had gone from severe to darned near psychedelic and almost everyone had some technicolor brilliance on their person.

My first thought, too, but I'm not sure if the Incompetence fits. In the film version, Maverick pops out a hidden revolver so quickly that it seems like a magic trick. To be fair, though, the Maverick of TV did have a slower draw.

Hmm, I somehow got it stuck in my head that it was 1/10 of starting wealth. No matter the level of sig gear, the Maverick boys have exactly $1000 of it: they each pin a $1000 bill into their suit vests for emergencies. Wasn't really sure if sig gear applied since it's cash, but it really is their signature item, mentioned in many episodes.
