Default Orcs of the Vastar

I play games in the Forgotten Realms setting. I mostly don't convert things, but use the colour text from D&D books and select GURPS stats to match.

In the area around the city where my PCs are setting up their merchant shipping company, there was once a kingdom of orcs. These orcs were gray orcs, subtly different from the main subrace of orcs on Faerun in that they arrived en masse through Gate spells during the Orcgate Wars and are thus not native to the plane. See the differences here.

They conquered the area of what is now known as the Vast and ruled the great kingdom of Vastar for hundreds of years. In those days, their gods walked the earth and they knew technology ahead of that which their human rivals possessed. But infighting tore the tribes apart and humanity equalled and surpassed their arts. But the Teeth of the Vastar still ruled their land without interference, for they bred faster than any human tribe could match and they were a warlike breed. No army could enter Vastar and hope to live.

The dwarves shattered their complacency when they came through their tunnels in search of ore and riches. The realm of Vastar was in the midst of the worst civil war in history, torn between warlords, when the dwarves came. And they came prepared, with weapons forged of the mystical metal Orcslayer, whose touch was poisonous to orcs.

In the Orcslayer Wars, the power of Vastar was broken and the surviving orcs were reduced to making a living in the mountains of the Earthfast and Earthspur or hiding in swamps, moors and other undesirable locations. The dwarves called their new kingdom the Realm of Glittering Swords.

The years passed. The dwarves fell to resurgent orcs, whose resilient breeding population made up for the losses of the wars and then some. But the orcs had lost so many leaders, shamans and loremasters that they could not rebuild their civilisation and lost out to humans when that upstart race noticed this large swath of coastal lands rife for settlement. Again the orcs were pushed to the harsher climates of the mountains, to fight with stubborn dwarves over shelters of stone and ore to forge weapons and tools.

Now the humans have dwelled there so long that the realm of Vastar is more legend than history. Eight centuries, almost seventy orc generations, have passed since Mount Grimmerfang was the seat of the Overking.

But the orcs remember, helped by their loremasters and adepts of the society of the Keepers of the Purple Flame, sworn to unite the orc tribes into a strong kingdom once more. And the orcs breed, fight and grow stronger.

Since one PC has joined the army for a short tour, I thought I'd make battles for land and resources with the orcs a part of the campaign. In this thread, I'll post stats, descriptions of tribal society and the main tribes of the mountains and other orcish paraphernilia. I'd welcome comments.

We'll start with templates and some sample orcish characters.

Those orcs which are not as strong as their brethren mostly die or are sacrificed to the orcish deities, but some wily and resourceful ones manage to survive as scouts and hunters.

This should either be Resistant to Metabolic Hazards +3 [10], or Resistant to Poison +3 [5] and Resistant to Disease +3 [3] total [8], saving 2 points.

Gray Orc Longbowman (183 CPs)

The longbowmen are not only the best hunters in their tribes, they are also among of the most dangerous warriors. It takes awesome power to pull their deadly yew longbows and a tribe which can field even a few dozen orcs with the strength and dedication to master the weapon can raid almost with impunity.

My orcs should live about 60-70 years if they aren't killed by violence, which I figured was too close to human norms to be worth any points.

Why not just a straight ST +1[10]? The point cost is the same.

Nice templates Icelander. With GURPS's versatile system, great campaign settings like the Forgotten Realms would look so much better than with the D20 system.

Because thick-set bodies with strong backs and long, loping arms fit my view of gray orcs better.

Their legs are poorly adapted for kicking compared to their arms and they've got much more upper body strength.

This way their ST for choking or twisting limbs with their arms is 13 and 12 when they strike with them, which naturally leads them to be better wrestlers than strikers, which is positive.

In short, gray orcs are meant to be strong in a different way than a strong human.

Mountain orcs as well, for that matter, and I might switch out one +1 ST for the same there. In fact, I think I will.

Gray Orc Warrior (113 CPs)

The backbone of the tribal shieldwall, these warriors are feared throughout the civilised human lands. Their greatest weakness is their desire for individual glory, advancement and loot. In battle they might be relatively disciplined, but for an orcish leader to unify the warbands under anything resembling a strategic vision would take either a miracle or an individual of unsurpassed ability, ferocity and willpower.
