Default tranferral potion

While I was engaged in a game of munchkin with my group we stumbled upon a conundrum in our game. While one of the players was fighting a level 8 gazebo another player used transferral potion to make himself fight the monster. I was led to believe that you could only make another player fight the monster. To settle this dispute I call upon anyone with enough experience to lead me in the right direction.

There are official rulings that state that you can transfer it to yourself. It's also referenced in the FAQ, albeit indirectly:

A. You do; you killed it. (This has been ruled different ways at different times, but we got a ruling directly from Steve, so it trumps everything else.) You get your level and Treasures after the whole combat is resolved. If the other player also wins, you draw Treasures first.
The 'any other player' referenced in the card text refers to any other player than the one who owns the combat.

To piggy back off his question and your answer, the person that used the transferal potion to direct the monster to himself and he defeats it, does he also gain levels?
