Coffee Table Book Question

While playing munchkin my friend played the coffee table book after making a cup of coffee. Later on during another fight he was up by 1 so another friend dumped out and claimed he lost the bonus. The argument was whether the bonus would last for that fight and whether or not that was legal. The one with the card claimed it went against the not being a total [jerk] clause and he should keep the bonus. Thank You
