Default Phase one. Door kicking

New to the game and our friends are confused about the first phase "kick open the door" . On that phase we pick up a door card. Where we argue is what happens if it's not a monster.

From reading the rules I am under the assumption that no matter what that card is, you must show it face up. If it's a curse you are cursed. If not you can take it to your hand right? And of course fight if it's a monster.

What they have been doing is if it's not a monster they have been picking the card face down so only they know what they picked up..

To me I think that should only happen in phase two if you loot the room right?

Kicking open the door is always face up. Here's what the rules say, first line of that section:

There are no conditionals in that statement with respect to whether you show the card, nor are there any in any following statements. Everyone gets to see what you found when you kick open the door.
