It's Anne Baker from a novel called The Daedalus Incident, which features alchemically powered ships sailing the 18th century void, as well as alternate timelines.

Actually, while an LMD isn't out of the question, don't forget Brunnhilde the Valkyrie from Asgard. "It's a magical place." He could have easily mistaken an island on the Asgardian continent for Tahiti, post-mortem. ;)
