I like the idea of keeping a lasso among the useful weapons just because it is fun, and fun trumps realism every time. But when the rules zoom out past fun into crazy town I think it is good to pull things back a bit into the fun zone. If I were to change just one thing that I feel would make a big difference it would be to impose thrown weapon range penalties, and let the rest stand.

Yep. My sentiments also. The range rules for lasso is the only thing that bothers me. Of course, the GM will have to do his job in deciding what will happen in odd situations like Frodo Baggins trying to rope a giant, etc. If you nerf the lasso too much, no one will ever pick it up and that would be a shame.
