Default New player, need a recommendation on core set.

Hey there, I'm a new player. I played my first 3 games over the course of the last two days, and I had a lot of fun.

So now I'm looking to get my own core set, but I can't seem to decide between Apocalypse and Zombies. Cthulhu was an option too for a while, but none of my friend who play are really into Lovecraftian stuff, so I figured I'd be better off getting one of the others.

My friends own the vanilla set, as well as the Demented Dungeons expansion. The idea is to have great stand-alone games, but also be able to combine our core sets (and perhaps expanions too) to make the game even more awesome.

With that in mind, which of the two sets I mentioned would be best suited for a new player, and which one would make a better combination with the vanilla set? I'm open to other suggestions as well, but I'd rather focus on Apocalypse and Zombies. Legends also sounds nice, but is unfortunately not available to me.

Thank you for your time and any helpful answers. :)

Between those two, Munchkin Zombies is much better for new players. Munchkin Apocalypse is a very brutal game that could alienate some new players due to how brutal it can be. The monsters are tough and get tougher throughout the game and it can be difficult to even get off Level 1.

As for blending, I think Munchkin Zombies would probably win again. The Seals mechanic of Apocalypse feels a tad watered down when you start blending it in. There is an optional rule to get more Seals to open, but it's not the same as the dread you get from the proper cards to open Seals. Zombies tends to blend quite well with the base set.

Having said all that, Munchkin Apocalypse is probably my favourite version of all the flavours. I just wouldn't play it with players totally new to Munchkin.

Sounds good. Having talked to other people I know and have played it, most seem to recommend Zombies as well.

So far I think I'll go with that, I could always look into Apocalypse somewhere down the line.

And Zombies has the Dungeon cards too when you add Zombies 3, Hideous Hideouts. So if you wanted to add that into the mix as well you'd have twice the dungeon goodness.

Just a quick reply to say I have decided - I ended up getting Munchkin Zombies. Will be having our first game this Friday!

Although I was wondering if there were any interesting house rules you guys could offer when combining Zombies with vanilla. So far we figured it might be interesting to have people choose at the beginning of the game whether they want to be humans or zombies - humans get to play classes and races, zombies get to play mojos and powers.

Anything else I could throw in?

The way the game is designed, you let them be both, so everyone starts as a Human Zombie. You can have classes, races, mojos and powers.

Just deleted a note about "house rules." The 101 forum is not the place for those; let's help people get the ACTUAL rules correct before spinning them off in a new direction. Thanks.
