Re: [IC] Strange Neighbors
Captain Crewey hails the Challenger IV with a polite but not especially friendly greeting, explaining what the Honor of the Earth is and that it is headed for the Centauri systems.

Re: [IC] Strange Neighbors
You receive a message back:
"This is Martin Snow, governor of the Challenger IV. We are currently en-route to A. Centauri. We will be shutting down our engines shortly to upgrade them to the latest standards. Do not approach within 1 light hour of our craft. Any news from earth would be appreciated." The message is in audio. Martin has one of the strangest accents you have ever heard. |

Re: [IC] Strange Neighbors
[ooc] does Captain Crewey have any idea who these
people are? Captain Crewey orders that an assortment of available non-classified news be transmitted to the Challenger IV. He also forwards the recording to his sister to see if she can make anything of it. [ooc] She has Linguistics 15, and also Psychology-14 and Expert Skill (Xenology)-15 if they help.

Re: [IC] Strange Neighbors
Dr. Crewey goes over the recording and finds no match for Martin's accent, though it does seem to have a few of the quirks of those under Wood rule.
With recorded speeds, they have been in space for around 30 years, and would have been launched during Wood's reign. |

[ooc] Curious self-control roll: 3d6=16 megafail.
Abigail is fascinated by this apparent example of isolated language development. She makes every effort possible to get more chances to talk to these people. Nate won't slow down the ship for her, but he does grudgingly permit continued comm while it lasts, since he would like to get more info on these people. Gale spends the next 24 hours or so (as long as she can) talking to the Challenger as much as she possibly can, interviewing them, asking them questions about their mission and background, who they have on board, what their hopes are, and generally trying to pry as much info out of them as she can. [ooc] Relevant skills: Diplomacy-21, Detect Lies-16, Sociology-14, Psychology (Human)-14. She also has Empathy (rolling against IQ 13), and +4 reactions from Voice and Diplomacy 20+. If the Challenger has a social scientist of its own, she'll try to talk to them, and get another +1 reactions from her Academic Talent. Eventually her Less Sleep 4 and FP 12 may start to matter!

Re: [IC] Strange Neighbors
you have 50 hours, so the less sleep and FP will come into play. The closest they have to a social scientist is the aged psychiatrist and his apprentice.
There mission is the same as yours, to reach alpha centauri. Your arrival has been a huge shock to them. They thought they would live out their lives among each other and their children would live on a different planet. Now they will be able to see alpha centari and earth, but they won't be the first to reach alpha centauri, and its a blow to them. It also seems that the more politics they know about, the colder they are towards you. after the first hour, Gale is unable to get any of the important members of the ship to talk to her for the next five hours. At the end of that time, they come forward with a declaration of nationality, declaring themselves to the nation "The Republic of Quads", and stating their intention to be friendly to the IAH, but without the intention to join it. Which would put them on the same ground as one other country, switzerland, and that had a LONG tradition of neutrality and could watched. |

Re: [IC] Strange Neighbors
Xenophilic Gale will welcome them warmly into the community of free peoples, even though she has no authority to do so and an unreasonably optimistic assessment of how the bigwigs at home will see this.

Re: [IC] Strange Neighbors
Keiki Miruka, The Military commander, is uneasy about the colony ship. He approaches the captain "Is what they did legal? They're sympathizers with Wood, and the last thing we need is a nations our opponents can rally to."

Re: [IC] Strange Neighbors
Alright then, general use of time for Andrew: Assuming everything is going right with the ship, and there are no major problems he will spend:
8 hours a day day a week working 6 hours a day studying engineering and try to improve his ability in it (studying engineering (warp drive) as per the improvement through study rules), 6 hours of general hygiene, sleep, food and relaxation 4 hours sleeping. For the purposes of learning that should be five hours of learning a day per the rules on 292, from work and self-teaching. On this new ship, he'll probably ask Gale to see if they can get the specs for him to look at, but other than that... |

"Let the politicians figure that out. Our job is to keep our passengers safe and see them safely down to a new planet. As longas they don't make trouble I don't care what grand ideas they come up with."
