Re: Purpose of "rolling to miss" rule

ITL p116: "Missile weapons never get a bonus for the target’s facing." But no mention of thrown weapons. The closest thing I can find is p 114 which says thrown attacks are identical to regular attacks except for range penalty. The wording is the same in Advanced Melee, and OG Melee 5th edition. And as far as "realism" goes, yes it is definitely easier to hit someone with an egg or dodge ball when they aren't looking at you. So the facing bonus for thrown weapons seems OK in that sense too. I agree with Tom, facing bonus does works oddly for rolling to miss allies. Maybe just ignore facing when rolling to miss, friend or foe. |

Re: Purpose of "rolling to miss" rule
We play with thrown weapons getting the modifier for facing. In our case, if you are rolling to miss a foe, this still makes sense. If you miss the roll it is as if he had deflected your thrown weapon out of the air on route to his colleague. If he has his back to you, it is a lot less likely it will be deflected, as such easier to miss him.
Now when trying to miss allies it is harder to explain why facing would matter. Maybe it is just easier to predict your allies' body movement when he is not also trying to predict your throw. So, we allow it in both case. Throwing weapons is rare enough with enough disadvantages, it seems to be a good idea to give it grace. |
