Default Re: [Low-Tech] Armor Suits v2

A few little quibbles:

To my mind, a 'hauberk' is a garment which extends to at least the mid thigh and probably to the knee. I'd call something which only just covered the groin a 'haubergeon', especially if it didn't have sleeves. Made of cloth or leather, I think it would be better described as a 'gambeson', 'jerkin' or 'jack'.

I think it would be easier to use if you cut the number of available options down a bit. I can't see many people who want a quick set of pre-generated armor choosing jousing plate, mixed mail and plate or bezainted, hardened, heavy leather. On the other hand, you missed out quite a few options, like the jack-of-plates and horn.

I'm dubious about anything heavier than light layered leather, light layered cloth, fine mail or light segmented plate being made into gloves. I'd say that stuff like Heavy Mail should probably be restricted to mittens. I generally don't let solid plate cover the abdomen either.

All your Bezainted items have high DR vs. 'cr', which I think should be 'cut'.

Don't forget the arming doublet for the articulated Plate.

I don't see why articulated plate couldn't cover the abdomen. It isn't like a "one-torso unit" of medium plate is a single piece of rigid metal, after all. Same goes for plate gloves / gauntlets—doesn't seem to be any reason you would have to restrict it to segmented plate (although I might agree that the heavier variations of plate would probably be too thick to accommodate a sufficiently find level of articulation for fingered gauntlets. Best stick to mitts in that case).

Out of curiosity, considering how many options you offered for "plate and mail," I'm curious as to why you never used the actual mail and plates armor option from LT.

great work, brock. A little polish after forumians have ironed ironed out potential flaws and I'd say this has the making of a great community pdf.

Mostly, I think, is I find the description for it is rather vague; I don't have a clear picture in my head of what it's supposed to look like.

This is the fourth link which comes up when I googled "mail and plates". Five minutes would give better pictures.

I don't really understand where Segmented Plate becomes Plate, since Plate can be articulated. For example, do gauntlets have to be segmented? But hand armour needs to be as light as possible, and Segmented Plate is twice as heavy as Plate.

"Mail and plates" in LT is for a type of armor very different from what he's writing up. It's mail armor with (small) plates incorporated into it in places. Generally seen in Asia. Not the simple layering of plate armor over mail.

My impression is that you're not actually supposed to use the Plate stats for anything that requires extensive articulation. A breastplate covering the chest can be just one piece of metal. Below the ribcage, you need a great deal of flexibility, so stat as segmented plate.

Limbs are much simpler. Even the joints are quite limited. It might be appropriate to use segmented plate on the elbows and knees, but maybe that's unnecessary.

Hands are of course terribly complicated and extremely flexible...

Huh. My impression was that segmented plate represented something rather different from platey-plate, and certainly wasn't considered representative of "articulated plate." I've been operating on the basis that segmented plate is, well... plate that is divided into smaller segments (lorica segmentata being the archetypal example)without having anything to do with articulation and certainly nothing to do with flexibility.
