[3e] San Mateo (Spanish galleon)
San Mateo Spanish Galleon (TL4)
The San Mateo is a typical example of a Spanish galleon. She fought famously in the Battle of the Azores in 1582, repelling boarders from several French ships and then returning to the fight to capture two opposing vessels. The San Mateo may have been armed with 30-34 guns. A typical crew would include 24 officers, 42 seamen, 30 apprentice seamen, 16 pages, 34 gunners, and 204 soldiers. Subassemblies: Body with Mediocre lines +8, one 163' Foremast +4, one 171' Mainmast +4, one 90' Mizzenmast +2, one 72' Bonaventure Mizzenmast +2. Powertrain: 27,677 sf of Barquentine-rigged Cloth Sails. Occupancy: Up to 16 in cabins, up to 335 in hammocks. Minimum crew is 1 driver + 6 sailors. Assumes 350 crew. Flotation Rating: 2,138 tons. Design Notes: Structure is Medium, with Standard materials. Waterproofed. Armor is DR 8 Standard Wood. The volume of the armor is figured into the design, as per the rules on p. VEii5. Body volume was simply assessed as 100 cf per ton of displacement. Mast heights were determined from an illustration of the ship. Provisions are provided for one month; spoilage would occur for larger amounts. Features "On Deck" are not included in the Body volume. Design draft was 8.5'; this was doubled for better realism.
