The stream was interesting but left me with more questions.

I always set my tools to my left, away from the playmat. Then I can interact with the playspace and never risk dragging my arms over the cards, dashboard, and tokens. It's the exact same trick I use for the majority of games that I play. Placing everything directly in front of you limits your ability to engage with others and the board.

I think that it depends a lot on who you play games with. I have friends (and my wife) who often have this sort of thing happen during games of a wide variety. Others, very rarely. As a data point, I saw it happen twice in the half-dozen or so games I played at FnordCon.

Having a track does make it a bit less likely to occur than just having pieces on top of a cardboard sheet.

The craziest thing I've seen is people rolling their dice on the playmat, smacking into the cars. I assume these are the same people who roll their dice on the Risk board and knock all of the armies around.

We may need a guidebook for proper game etiquette.

Tell them to roll the dice into the upside-down box lid.

Good info to have for planning. Thanks, Phil!

That's my protocol when I am running a game: Dice rolls in the box lid. (Also: Any food or drink stays *below* tabletop level -- I remember than one _Murphy's Rules_ about the game counters printed in *water-soluble ink*. :) )

As to the car dial and card: I'm right-handed, so "naturally" that stuff goes to my right.

Mainly, I'm thinking in terms of "if it happens once, there is a non-zero chance of it happening again"; so that's why I brought it up to begin with.

It appears that this is normal for many gamers, no one has ever called me out for doing this and now that I'm aware that this can be an irritant I'll try to stop. About 30 years ago I was chewed out for not helping pick up the game pieces after the game and I almost always do help now.

There are a few issues, the largest of which is that dice can disrupt positioning and play. With painted miniatures, no one wants dice smashing into their paint work. The box lid suggestion is a good one. Some people use those snapping dice trays these days.
