Default Cursing Curses!

Hi all! Brand new Munchkin player and my 9yo son and I are arguing over something that seems mostly spelled out in the rules but I have an issue with.

When you kick open the door and get a curse card, I think you should NOT be able to loot the room. You play out the curse and you're done. My son says you still get to loot the room.

He's 9. I'm, well ... way over 9. I'm older and smarter. Who's right (and no matter what you say my smarter brains says my way makes more sense so I may lie if I'm wrong)??

He's right. Under Turn Phases, the rules say:
Quote:
Loot The Room:
If you did not find a monster by kicking open the door and you did not Look For Trouble, you loot the room . . . draw a second card from the Door deck, face
down, and place it in your hand. If you met a monster but ran away, you don’t get to loot the room.
The only thing that stops you from Looting the Room is fighting a Monster (or a card's effect.)

PS, My son is 11 this Wednesday, and I know full well he's smarter than me. I'm older and I currently know more, but I fear the day he figures out he's smarter.

It is completely spelled out in the rules, not mostly. Look For Trouble says it can be done "[i]f you did NOT draw a monster when you first opened the door." Loot The Room says it can be done "[i]f you did not find a monster by kicking open the door and you did not Look For Trouble."

Your son is correct, and, seeing that the rules are explicit, your way has no basis for argument. I would suggest not lying to your son about it because it's going to be worse when he finds out he was correct and you lied to seem smarter and to have your way. I have 3 kids, and I teach them that fair play is more valuable than winning any day of the week.

Thanks, Andy! Yeah, I know he's right but I still think it's better if you don't get to loot the room when you get cursed. Makes more sense to me (of course, I also think it makes more sense to pull a treasure card when you loot the room instead of a door card since you've already kicked in the door so ...). I guess we'll have to play the "right" way since we'll be playing with other people who know the game soon.

Erik, my issue doesn't so much involve trying to cheat as it does trying to play the game in a way that seems to be more logical and makes more sense to me. A curse should be a curse. You're done for that turn. But, I didn't make up the game so I'll play by the rules which will be necessary anyway since we're going to start playing with other people. Maybe that will be just our two player rule!

Since the official rule has been explained and acknowledged, I think this thread is done. If you want to continue discussing your own modifications to the rules, there's a thread for house rules in the main Munchkin forum.
