The weight is gravity dependent. 1 kg of water on earth or any other 1G planet is 1kg, but only 0.5kg on a 0.5G world and weightless in space. The mass is the same in any of these circumstances.

Given that you Basic Lift increases in low gravity circumstances and decreases in high gravity, I'm think that weight actually means weight in GURPS. This however is likely an inversion as other wise you could store infinite stuff in a Hideaway whilst in zero-G.

That doesn't sound quite right, however it actually seems to be a problem with how the (Kilo)gram is taught and defined rather then anything else.

Another way to look at typical average densities of common cargo is to consider than a standard 40 foot intermodal cargo container has an internal volume of 67.5 cubic meters and a maximum rated load of 26.2 metric tons.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intermodal_container
This means that when loaded to its maximum rated weight, the stuff inside has an average density of 0.385 tons/m^3, or 0.385 kg/liter, or 0.385 times the density of water. The 20 foot containers are a bit better, with an average density at maximum load of 0.852 that of water.

Physics. It doesn't have anything to do with the difference between pounds or grams.

Exactly. With no volume limit, you could. And players might come up with ways to decrease gravity to zero to make that just happen, if the rules didn't state a volume limit.

You want to make things get really interesting? I had a brain-fart that said it might be possible the have this cast on your fingernails ! Double checking the rules reveals that this likely isn't possible, but could provide a good source for buying levels of Payload as a Magic Perk.

Checking up the rules of payload reveals something interesting: "20 lbs. of cargo space is roughly equal to one cubic foot of capacity."

Just giving another reason why the rules have to give a volume limit in addition to a weight limit.

Why would you be able to cast Hideaway on your fingernails? Hideaway needs an opening and my fingernails are single unit construction.

Being able to Enchant living tissue is dubious but f you could get around that you might be able to put Hideaway on your respiratory system or maybe your ear canals. The alimaentary canal has two openings and I think that wouldn't work for Hideaway. None of these would be a good idea even if possible.

I don't think even it would be equivalent to Payload (Magic). Enchnting per Magic and buying Powers doesn't really cross over anyway.

Try this instead then, casting on the space under your fingernails

Amulet is explicitly able to do this, Malefice and Ensorcel probably count as well

Think of it as an explanation for how the Perk would work.

You could only store things that fit through the "opening". That might be limited to garden dirt you'd been digging in. Then there's getting things back out and that might be gross.

Payload (Cosmic) might be easier to explain if you left out the part about your fingernails. Just talk about things you touch vanishing into a magical space.
