Default Stake Sauce "+6 Against Undead" Question

This is a question about the Stake Sauce item card (of 200 gold value).

The card text says "Use during any combat. +3 to either side ... or +6 when used against Undead. Usable once only."

If another munchkin is fighting an Undead monster and winning with a combat strength of +4, can I play this card to enhance the Undead and give him +6 which would thus put the munchkin in negative territory. ?

My alternate understanding is that the "+6 against Undead" means that that enhancement only applies to assist a munchkin against Undead.

So in this scenario, which is it? +3 to the Undead (and thus not strong enough to defeat the munchkin) or +6 to the Undead (and enough to defeat the munchkin)?

The +6 bonus only applies when used to help a munchkin who is fighting an Undead monster. At all other times, the card's bonus is +3.
