For some reason, I thought I read somewhere that the average US tax burden was around 20% of income. Obviously, that memory was incorrect.
If we increase the average tax burden to 40% and hold it steady and alter the assumptions I made earlier about starting wealth compared to GDP so that GDP Per Capita post-tax is 1.5 times starting wealth instead of 2 time starting wealth, we get a per-capita GDP of $50,000 at TL8, which is roughly correct for the US right now. This makes per-capita GDP $250,000 at TL12, which is roughly twice that listed in GURPS Space. This doubles the total tonnage available - which, when combined with the increased operating costs mentioned earlier means they remain unchanged. |

Not necessarily. The figure might have been for federal taxes only. And whoever compiled it might have gone along with the politicians' pretence that debts they run up on the national credit card aren't just as much of a burden as cash they squander out of the national wallet.
