Default Can In Nomine be resurrected?

There hasn't been an In Nomine product in I don't know how long; the In Nomine mailing list is silent; and even this forum has been averaging less than a post a week over the course of the last year. No gamelines ever truly dies; but this is as close to dead as I've seen.

What can be done to rectify this state of affairs? My first thought is that In Nomine needs a new edition, even if there are still first editions sitting around in the warehouse; if they haven't sold by now, they're unlikely to sell any time soon. And I'd recommend a Kickstarter campaign — not so much to raise funds for it as to raise awareness.

What should be in the new edition? That's also where the Kickstarter comes in: depending on the response, it could be as simple as “the same material as 1e, but better organized and with some rules updates”, or it could be as elaborate as an omnibus edition that incorporates material from all of the Player's Guides, the GM's Guide, and the various Library books (Liber Canticorum, Liber Castellorum, etc.).

Should the setting be left as is, updated, or rebooted? The first approach leaves all existing supplements as least somewhat valid, as only mechanical tweaks would be needed to use them; the second would work about as well, with the only “invalid” information being stuff that was true at one time but isn't anymore. The third would let you scrap some of the more problematic aspects of the setting and possibly bring in some new elements to strengthen it overall, but at the cost of first edition supplements becoming that much less relevant with each change you make.

Thoughts?

I've wondered whether SJG even still has the rights to put out a new edition, honestly.

There’s no licensing issue.

Demonstrate that there's a market.

Exactly why I mentioned a Kickstarter. I know it's not a cure-all; but I'm thinking that it might be the only route to revitalizing the line that stands any chance at all.

I've got some stuff I could dust off, but remember that even starting up a kickstarter requires there to be enough perceived demand that the local staff wouldn't be having an unfavorable return for salaried time spent on it. Everything done has to be done with an eye to keeping the lights on, after all.

(I'd be tempted to test the waters with In Nomine: Soldiers, which would be a "IN-Lite for Humans" kinda thing that's probably on my hard drive somewhere. Maybe dredge up the IN 3d6 notes I took, see if it converts decently.

Really annoyed I can't find the most-recent Jean partial writeup that I had, though. I think a hard drive crash may've eaten it, which makes me mildly sick.)

I can't really think that there'd be much chance, even with a KS, for something that wasn't PDF-only -- but I don't actually know anything about the POD stuff they've been doing (see GURPS On Demand) or what the profit points are on it.

It's sorta like Limbo: gotta have enough Essence to make a vessel to get out.

That's a good analogy, actually.

Personally, I'd be fine with pdf-only; these days, I don't have the space for physical products anyway. But for those who like dead-tree editions, there's always the route that was taken by the first Dungeon Fantasy products: they were produced as PDFs, and their popularity leveraged them up to PoD status.

Would IN: Soldiers be playable by itself? Because anything that requires potential investors to buy other books in order to use what they get from a KS would severely cut into the project's viability. It's why I was talking in terms of a second edition. But you did say “IN-Lite for humans”, which does make me think that it might be self-contained.

All right. Any suggestions along those lines?

The usual sign would be people showing interest.

This forum has 33 threads that have been active in the last year, and the number of unique users is smaller than that. That's hardly the sign of a vigorous fan community, unless of course the discussion is occurring somewhere else.
